Alexej von Jawlensky

Russian-born Expressionist Alexej von Jawlensky settled in Munich, where he co-founded the Blue Rider group alongside Kandinsky. Best known for his intensely coloured, mask-like heads, his work distilled the human face into near-abstract fields of colour, seeking spiritual and emotional truth beyond likeness.
