Alice Brasser’s paintings are rooted in close observation of light: how it shifts with the seasons, disappears into darkness, and changes what we see. Working in oil and gouache from Haarlem in the Netherlands, she is particularly drawn to the transition between day and night. Rather than moving through distinct phases, Brasser has painted throughout her life, returning to familiar subjects again and again and finding something different in them each time.
