Van Gogh’s 1889 portrait of Joseph-Étienne Roulin, at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, inspired this piece. I focused on a snippet of the original and identifying colors rather than recreating the whole painting. I originally made nine 30" x 30" art history-inspired pieces like this to display in a grid at the Art on Paper fair in NYC.
